When is an ultrasound examination recommended?

Ultrasound is a widely used, informative and non-invasive diagnostic method that allows doctors to assess the structure of different organs and tissues and monitor changes over time.

An ultrasound examination may be recommended in cases of pain or discomfort, changes in organ function, to monitor previously identified changes, or when recommended by a doctor.

Ultrasound is used both for diagnosis and monitoring during treatment and, in certain cases, as part of a preventive health assessment.

Gynaecological ultrasound

Gynaecological ultrasound allows the assessment of the uterus, ovaries and other pelvic organs, as well as changes occurring throughout the menstrual cycle.

The examination can be used to monitor follicle growth, ovulation and corpus luteum development, as well as changes in the thickness and structure of the endometrium.

Gynaecological ultrasound may be recommended if:

  • you have menstrual cycle irregularities;
  • you are planning a pregnancy;
  • you are undergoing fertility assessment or treatment;
  • you have pain or discomfort in the lower abdomen or pelvic area;
  • previously identified changes need to be monitored;
  • your doctor has recommended an examination.

Ultrasound during pregnancy

Ultrasound is an important part of pregnancy monitoring. Examinations are performed according to the stage of pregnancy and the patient’s individual situation.

The following examinations are available:

  • detailed expert fetal ultrasound;
  • first, second and third trimester screening ultrasound;
  • fetal Doppler ultrasound and biometry;
  • fetal heart rate assessment with CTG;
  • publicly funded pregnancy monitoring and ultrasound screening examinations (a referral from the treating doctor is required).

Ultrasound is non-invasive and generally does not cause discomfort and can be performed during pregnancy when medically indicated.
