Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive gynaecological procedure that allows the doctor to examine the inside of the uterus using a specialised optical instrument called a hysteroscope. The procedure enables accurate diagnosis of changes within the uterine cavity and, when necessary, treatment during the same procedure.
Hysteroscopy may be recommended to:
- diagnose or remove uterine polyps;
- diagnose and treat abnormalities within the uterine cavity;
- investigate unexplained or heavy uterine bleeding;
- further assess abnormalities detected during an ultrasound examination;
- investigate possible causes of recurrent pregnancy loss or infertility.
