HBA Test

The HBA sperm functional test is designed to assess sperm functional quality, structural maturity, and fertilization potential.

Mature sperm cells are characterized by a high density of hyaluronan receptors, which are responsible for penetration into the egg cell. Spermatozoa that have completed the process of spermiogenesis are distinguished by the remodeling of the sperm plasma membrane, removal of cytoplasm, and nuclear maturation. In contrast, immature sperm cells with insufficiently remodeled membranes do not bind to hyaluronic acid receptors.

The HBA test has significant clinical importance in diagnosing male infertility and selecting the most appropriate IVF treatment method. It helps to successfully choose between IUI, IVF, and ICSI procedures by assessing sperm maturity and fertilization capability, or between ICSI and PICSI in cases where previous IVF attempts showed a low fertilization rate or poor embryo quality.

A functional sperm test performed before IUI, IVF, or ICSI allows the physician to select the most suitable treatment option for each couple, ensuring the best balance between cost and effectiveness.
