Female infertility: Causes and treatment
Female infertility is most often related to ovulation disorders, ovarian, fallopian tube, or uterine pathology. However, irrespective of the cause of female infertility, there are various effective fertility disorder treatments that can help a woman become a mother.
Why does female infertility occur?
Female infertility can be a consequence of constant emotional or physical tension, malnutrition, obesity, environmental pollution, and lifestyle choices, as well as various congenital or lifelong health issues. Likewise, age may be the reason why pregnancy does not occur. E.g., around the age of 40, only every third healthy woman succeeds to get pregnant.
What methods are female infertility treated with?
Before starting infertility treatment, careful women’s health examinations, including anamnesis summarization, gynaecological examination, ultrasound diagnosis and other diagnostic methods, are performed. Then, depending on the results of the diagnosis, the appropriate treatment – medication or surgical treatment, or artificial fertilization – is selected.
Female infertility is mainly diagnosed and treated with minimally invasive endoscopic and gynaecological surgery – hysteroscopy and laparoscopy. Often, such minimal surgical intervention is sufficient for women to be cured and the pair’s efforts to get a baby successfully. In addition, nowadays, endoscopic, and gynaecological surgery for infertility is performed using particularly gentle methods and fine tools, which allows to maximize the function of the ovaries, so you should not be afraid to seek medical help as soon as possible. Many families who have encountered female infertility can be effectively helped using medication, or surgical treatment, without using artificial fertilization methods.
Only in cases where the above methods of infertility treatment do not help, artificial fertilization is performed. Depending on the indications, a suitable fertilization method is selected for the couple. The first method is called intrauterine insemination (IUI), and the second method is called extracorporeal or ectopic fertilization, in other words, fertilization of the ovum outside the female body (ESA or IVF – in vitro fertilization).
Intrauterine insemination is performed during ovulation – during the natural menstrual cycle or stimulating ovulation with medication and by administering a pre -prepared male sperm in the uterus with a thin catheter. About 10–15% of women become pregnant thanks to this method of fertilization. It is recommended to repeat the procedure 3 times. Intrauterine insemination is a simple and painless procedure that does not require surgical intervention or aesthetic.
IVF fertilization is performed by taking ovum from the female body after ovulation stimulation and, under laboratory conditions, combining it with the male spermatozoids. The resulting embryos are then transferred to the uterine cavity, where they further develop in the natural environment.
